The HIV/AIDS programme was established inJuly 2001 with the mandate of strengthening the capacity of health sector in member states to effectively reduce HIV infections and improve access to quality care and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS. The programme was launched with the recognition that HIV/AIDS is currently a major challenge to development as it has impacted negatively on all sectors of national economies in the ECSA region.
Programme Objectives
- To advocate for effective policies, strategies and programmes for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.
- Build capacity of health care providers in managment of HIV/AIDS.
- Facilitate resource mobilization for an expanded and emergency response to the epidemic.
- Strengthen mechanisms to increase access to affordable drugs and commodities for HIV/AIDS related condtions.
Programme Accomplishments
Since inception the HIV/AIDS progamme has finalized and disseminated the ECSA HIV/AIDS Strategy, reviewed pre-service HIV/AIDS curricula, established a regional HIV/AIDS Advisory Committee to provide guidance on key HIV/AIDS policy issues and approaches, reviewed country policies, programmes and guidelines on Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT), initiatd the ECSA regional Drug Forum for AIDS Drugs and related commodities and initiated an assessment of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the health system in two member states.
