The purpose of the Food and Nutrition Programme is
to contribute to improved nutritional status of the people of ECSA. The progamme
was established with the recognition of the high prevalence of malnutrition in
the region with an estimated 40% of children the age of five years being stunted
while 20% are under weight (UNICEF 2004).
Programme Objectives
- Advocate for relevant nutrition policies and
programmes i the region.
- Contribute to the reduction of micronutrient deficiencies.
- Promote prevention and control of Non-communicable diseases.
- Promote harmonization of nutrition training including review and update of
nutrition curricula and continuing education.

Accomplishments
The Food and Nutrition programme has facilitated
nutrition policy development and reviews in member states, development of
guidelines for nutritional and support for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA),
building capacity to advocate for more resources, short-term courses in maternal
and child nutrition, Nutrition PROFILES to enhance nutrition advocacy in the
region, initiated planning for prevention and control of Non-Communicable
Diseases (NCDs) in the region, facilitated research on indigenous and
traditional foods, coordinated regional food fortification activities and
developed nutrition briefs on topical nutrition issues.
